7.5 Suji
If there are no genbutsu or honors, let’s look for suji.
With a 23-man ryanmen, toimen waits on 1-man and 4-man; with a 56-man ryanmen, on 4-man and 7-man.
Either way, toimen has discarded 4-man, one of the waits, and is in furiten. Toimen cannot ron on 1-man or 7-man.
So 1-man and 7-man cannot deal into a ryanmen. A tile three ranks away from a genbutsu like this is called suji.
147, 258, and 369 are suji to each other.
For 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9, a single genbutsu blocks every ryanmen.
Even if 1-man is genbutsu, 4-man can still deal into a 56-man ryanmen. Do not discard 4, 5, or 6 carelessly.
Suji blocks only ryanmen. You can still deal into kanchan, penchan, tanki, or shanpon waits.
